Just Write. Writers Conference, Sunday, September 27th

Excited to present two panels this Sunday, September 27 at the Just Write. Writers Conference at the Bel-Air Library in Harford County, Maryland. I'll be breaking down the short story in one session, and talking about the dos and don't's of submitting to literary journals in the other. There are more than 25 panels spread over 5 sessions, including writers Jessica Anya Blau, Elisabeth Dahl, and Elissa Brent Weissman, and agent pitches as well, so there's a lot to choose from. Hope to see you there!

"Pan-America" at Style Magazine

Thrilled to have short fiction featured in the July/August issue of Baltimore Style Magazine, along with Jessica Anya Blau, Elisabeth Dahl, and Timmy Reed: Pan America

The couple at the four-mile marker of the trail has the smallest Yorkie you’ve ever seen. It eats from a collapsible bowl under the picnic table as the woman offers you a drinking for the water pump.

“Hard to get enough like that,” she says as you curl your head under the stream of water.

You fill the plastic tumbler. The people who frequent hiking trails are super nice or super crazy. Sometimes they’re both. You consider this as you join her at the table, where she is spreading egg salad on wheat bread. Her husband, muscular, head covered in a bandana, repacks their SUV. To read more, go here.

Reading at the 2013 Baltimore Book Festival, Sept 28

I'll be reading and hosting (I always like to multitask) the 510 Readings Series at the 2013 Baltimore Book Festival. Check out our great lineup at 6:30 pm, Saturday, Sept. 28th, at the CityLit tent:

Jessica Anya Blau
Aubrey Hirsch
Heather Rounds
Noel Sloboda
Simon Frueland
Jen Michalski

Also, many thanks to the Chesapeake Wine Company for providing free wine during the reading (wine and writers, always dangerous). Signing afterwards, and probably some drinks at the Owl Bar. Join us? Of course you will.

You can find out more information about the authors (and other readings) at the BBF site here. And maybe, if you come early enough, you can meet the real literary superstars:

JHU Barnes & Noble, 6/14/2013
So cool to open up the weekend edition of The Baltimore Sun and see this profile on my publishing three books this year! Thanks to Mary McCauley for writing the piece and also moderating a great Q&A between me and Jessica Blau at the Johns Hopkins Barnes & Noble. Her questions were original and thought-provoking and enabled an in-depth, accessible discussion on craft. (And also thanks to writer Betsy Boyd for the pic!)

6/27/13: Book Talk with Authors Jen Michalski & Jessica Blau at Barnes & Noble on July 14th

I'm excited to read with fellow writer and Baltimorean Jessica Anya Blau at Barnes & Noble (JHU location) on July 14th (12 pm to 1 pm). We'll be reading from our latest releases, The Wonderbread Summer and The Tide King, respectively, and signing and talking and getting big frappes with whipped creme at the Starbucks Cafe. Won't you come join us?
